How to Prepare Your Child for a Doctor’s Visit

Doctor’s visits are an important part of keeping kids healthy, but they can sometimes feel overwhelming for both children and parents. A little preparation can go a long way toward making the experience smooth and stress-free.

1. Talk About the Visit Ahead of Time

Explain in simple terms why your child is going to the doctor — whether it’s for a checkup, a vaccination, or because they’ve been feeling unwell. Use positive, reassuring language.

2. Bring Comfort Items

A favorite toy, blanket, or book can provide reassurance in the waiting room or during the exam.

3. Practice at Home

Play “doctor” with your child using a toy stethoscope or flashlight. This can help them feel more comfortable when the real exam happens.

4. Be Honest but Gentle

If shots or other procedures are planned, let your child know they might feel a quick pinch or sting — but also that it will be over quickly and helps them stay healthy.

5. Offer Praise and Support

After the visit, praise your child for being brave. A small reward, like choosing a fun activity, can help them associate doctor visits with positive experiences.

When to Reach Out

If you’re concerned about your child’s anxiety around doctor visits, talk with your pediatrician. They can provide additional strategies to make visits easier.
